The newest segment of the Pick 6 Challenge starts off with the biggest race of them all, the Kentucky Derby. We’ve also got 5 other races scheduled today, with the first at 1:56pm, the Pat Day Mile. Get your picks in and see how your skills match up against the rest.
Race 1: Pat Day Mile Stakes (G2)
- Jack Christopher – Undefeated in only 2 starts, high speed figs, well bet, working out well, good trainer and jockey, only concern is long layoff, last start October last year.
- My Prankster – High speed figs, winner 2 of last 3, will likely have to close on Jack Christopher, good trainer, high percentage jockey, well bet, winner of the Swale.
- Pappacap – Faced much stronger fields, has some good speed, dropping distance, working bullets, will need to pick up the pace.
Race 2: Derby City Distaff (G1)
- Just One Time – Likely the favorite, winner of last 4, highest speed figs, high percentage trainer, winner at distance, working out well.
- Bell’s the One – Has finished first or second in last 6 races, winner at track, winner at distance, high speed figs, second to Just One Time last race.
- Obligatory – Winner of last 2, winner at Churchill, good speed figs, high percentage jockey / trainer, decent stakes record.
Race 3: American Turf Stakes (G2)
- Sy Dog – Undefeated in 3 starts, working well, winner at distance, not much stakes experience.
- Portfolio Company – Bad race in the BC Juvenile Turf, but before that second twice in Graded stakes, hasn’t raced in 6 months, experience on turf at distance.
- Stolen Base – Graded stakes experience, second to Tix the Bomb in the Battaglia, adequate speed figs, gets a better jockey, working well.
- Just Missed – Main Event – Good speed figs, winner of 2 of last 3, winner at distance, working bullets, also not much stakes experience.
- Balnikhov? Don’t underestimate the horses racing overseas.
Race 4: Churchill Downs Stakes (G1)
- Jackie’s Warrior – Winner of 5 of last 6, winner at distance, winner at track, high percentage jockey, Asmussen is going to win at least 1 race today, working well, only downside is recent starts have been 6f.
- Aloha West – Winner of 3 of last 4, winner BC Sprint, hasn’t raced since November, working well, success at distance and track, good speed.
- Cezanne – Pletcher takes over, sticks with same jockey, winner at distance, hit the board in 6/7 starts, good speed figs, has Pletcher got something up his sleave?
- Just Missed – Mind Control – I want to think this horse can win, but I think he isn’t a match for Jackie’s Warrior and I think he is just more likely to finish 3rd or 4th rather than win.
Race 5: Turf Classic Stakes (G1)
- Tribhuvan – High speed figs, dropping distance, multiple Grade 1 winner, winner at distance, hasn’t raced since November, ready for a return to form?
- Shirl’s Speight – Winner last 3, adding distance, high percentage trainer / jockey, lacking big race experience?
- Ivar – Grade 1 winner, good speed figs, increasing distance, contender in multiple Grade 1 stakes, can run with the best, is it enough?
Race 6: Kentucky Derby (G1)
- Epicenter – Been my pick for a while, winner 4 of last 5, good speed figs, high percentage jockey, big wins.
- Messier – I don’t usually feel like West Coast horses are my top picks in the Derby, but Messier has the speed and has shown the results to be considered. Finished first or second in all 6 starts, high speed figs, working well, will he be caught again?
- Zandon – Has raced well against those in this field, winner last race, high speed figs, high percentage jockey, working out well.
- Taiba – Can’t underestimate a Mike Smith entry with these speed figs, undefeated in 2 starts, working bullets, watch out.
- White Abarrio – I love White Abarrio for the price, winner of the Florida Derby and Holy Bull, lacks the speed figs of a Messier or Taiba, working out well, winner of 4/5.
- Tiz the Bomb – My sneaky pick, love the long odds, put up a 101 in the Jeff Ruby Steaks, winner of last 2, loves the turf and all weather, may not like the dirt, worth a $1 win though.
Always an exciting day when it is Derby day, enjoy a great day of racing, and good luck in the Pick 6 Challenge.
