Preakness Stakes Weekend, May 21, 2022

Chad Brown Trainees

It is the second leg of the Triple Crown, but we will see no Triple Crown winner this year with Rich Strike not making the race. We’ve got 5 races from Pimlico, biggest race day of the year there. Then we tack on one from Churchill Downs, the Louisville stakes. Let’s have a look at those fields.

Race 1: Dinner Party Stakes (G2)

  • Atone – Good speed figs, working out well in recent starts, experience at distance, placed well, I am concerned about tired and two 7th places in the last two races at 1 mile.
  • Set Piece – Consistent speed figs, but seems to have lost a step since last year. Working out well, but I am concerned about tiring in a 1 miler.
  • Beacon Hill – Lacking in stakes experience, winner at distance and at Pimlico, lots of experience at distance and longer.
  • I’d like to figure out how to get English Bee and Novo Sol in here too…

Race 2: Chick Lang Stakes (G3)

  • Old Homestead – Undefeated in 3 starts, high speed figs, dropping distance from last race, working bullets, goes tot he front.
  • Cogburn – Can he come back from defeat last start? Experience at distance, rising speed figs, will go to the from too.
  • Whelen Springs – Winner of last 3 at distance, with good speed and a neck over Cogburn. Working out well.
  • Just Missed – Lightning Larry – Dropping distance, finished first or second in 7/8 starts, moving back to 6f, working out well.

Race 3: Sir Barton Stakes

  • Ethereal Road – Scratched from the Derby but had good results in the Rebel and Lexington, should be able to handle this less experienced field? Working out well, rail post, dropping in class.
  • B Dawk – Won by 11 last race while driving, highest speed figure, coming off a win, keeps same jockey.
  • Mr Jefferson – Ran second last race, hot jockey and trainer, dropping distance, working out well, could be a nice price.

Race 4: Jim McKay Turf Sprint Stakes

  • Carotari – Distance and Turf specialist, good speed figs, winner last 2 races, stakes experience, working well.
  • Grateful Bred – Winner on turf and at distance, 2/2 at Pimlico, ran second last race, working out well, keeps jockey familiar with the horse and racing well.
  • Seven Scents – Good horse at distance, a step behind in speed figs, winner last race.

Race 5: Louisville Stakes (G3)

  • Another Mystery – Big race to finish second last race at distance, good speed figs, stakes experience, familiar distance.
  • Shamrocket – Beaten last race but returning to a more familiar distance, working out well, figure Pletcher knows what he is doing.
  • Ajourneytofreedom – Tough to figure out, beaten a lot recently, but consistent speed figs, might be enough against this field, awful record at distance, like he had 1 good race, Hard Spun?

Race 6: Preakness Stakes (G1)

  • Epicenter – Just beaten in the Derby, high speed figures, successful at distance, you know this horse already.
  • Early Voting – Beaten by a neck in the Wood Memorial, high speed figs, adding distance, working well.
  • Secret Oath – She ran well against the males and also won the Oaks, no reason she can’t do well here too, winner 3 of last 4, good speed figs.

75/90 of the last Preakness winners have come out of the Derby, it may be tough to beat Epicenter, but it can be done. See if you can pick better than me.
