Big 3 Derby Prep Day

luis saez saratoga

We are back for another weekend of racing, and we have three big derby prep races from three different tracks today.  We’ll be racing at Santa Anita, Aqueduct, and Tampa Bay today.  Let’s get to it!

Race 1: Frank E. Kilroe Mile Stakes (G1)

  • Got Stormy – has the speed, coming off a great 2019 campaign, working out well, looking for first win of 2020.
  • River Boyne – 7 wins at Santa Anita, coming off a win, only knock is he has failed against these horses in the past.
  • Ohio – moving up in class, coming off a win, inconsistent finishes, won Frank E. Kilroe last year.
  • Just Missed – Next Shares – may have the speed? Hot Jockey, Hot Trainer, wins just haven’t been there…

Race 2: Florida Oaks (G3)

  • Walk In Marrakesh – always hits the board, 3 wins, all on turf, working out well, but hasn’t raced since September
  • New York Groove – can’t leave her out, undefeated in 4 starts, but never on turf, and never more than 7f
  • Micheline – tough post here, give her the edge over Ivyetsu, ran 2nd last time out, and a win in December, may be trending upward?

Race 3: Tampa Bay Derby (G2)

  • Chance It – sure looks like a 2 horse race here, 3 straight 100+ bayers, bullet workouts, and a win at distance
  • Sole Volante – winner of 3 of 4, working well, winner at distance, could be a great showdown
  • Market Analysis – coming in with the hot Johnny V, Pletcher combo, working out well, were they saving him for this race? Never gone distance though.

Race 4: Gotham Stakes (G3)

  • Attachment Rate – winner at mile last time out, working well, fast pace
  • Mischevious Alex – winner last race, looking fast, bullet workouts
  • Untitled – 2nd last time out, moving to shorter distance, working well, 105 in December
  • Just Missed – War Stopper – also won at a mile, and at Aqueduct, close to winning speed

Race 5: San Felipe Stakes (G2)

  • Authentic – everything lining up for him, fast, undefeated, high percentage jockey and trainer, bullet workouts
  • Thousand Words – also undefeated, high percentage jockey and trainer, has won at distance, fast workouts
  • Honor A.P. – I put him here because of Mike Smith, winner last time out, may improve, could contend
  • Just Missed – Storm the Court – winner at distance, bullet workout, won Breeders Cup Juvenile

Race 6: Santa Anita Handicap (G1)

  • Gift Box – 108 last time out, proven winner, second in Gold Cup, beat Midcourt last time, winner at distance
  • Midcourt – coming off a win too, can he best Gift Box this time?
  • Hofburg – never quite made it in the G1 races last year, but the fact that he was second in the Fla Derby, and raced in good company puts him here over Endorsed.  Will need a mighty bounce back after disappointing Mineshaft.
  • Just Missed – Endorsed – 4th in Travers stakes, lightly raced, moving up in class.  Honestly, could go either way with Hofburg.

Looks like a great day of racing, good luck everyone!
