Florida Derby, Saturday March 28th

Connect wins Curlin Stakes

Another big prep race on the schedule this week with the Florida Derby set to run Saturday March 28th. Big fields this week too at Gulfstream so lots of horses to chose from, should make things interesting. We bring you a selection from the 10 Stakes races (6 graded) for the day.

Race 1: Hal’s Hope Stakes (G3)

  • You’re to Blame – bullet workout, high jockey/train win percentage, raced 5 times at distance and multiple times longer
  • American Tattoo – dropping in distance, high trainer percentage
  • Harvey Wallbanger – has gone the distance 4 times, last race a win and “surging at the rail”, 2 wins at Gulfstream
  • Just Missed – Prompt – a longshot horse that is used to long distances, hit the board last 6 starts, winner 3 times at distance

Race 2: Orchid Stakes (G3)

  • Gentle Ruler – going with the wins here, won 6 of 7 last year, training well, graded stakes winner, winner at distance, working out well
  • Mean Mary – winner of 3 of last 4, high jockey/trainer win percentage, hasn’t “weakened” yet
  • Elizabeth Way – winner of last 2, graded stakes winner, working bullets, both wins at Gulfstream
  • The long shot – Beale Street – coming off a win while driving at a shorter distance, moving up in class, high percentage jockey, hit the board in 8 of 10 starts

Race 3: Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2)

  • Tonalist’s Shape – undefeated in 5 starts, best speed, high percentage trainer, 4 wins at Gulfstream, bullet workout, may be best bet
  • Spice Is Nice – second to Tonalist’s Shape, high percentage trainer, both races at Gulfstream, maybe her day today?
  • Lake Avenue – proven stakes winner, proven jockey, generally good workouts, Aqueduct shipper

Race 4: Kitten’s Joy Pan American Stakes (G2)

  • Zulu Alpha – monster speed, high percentage trainer, winner last 2 with Gaffalione, 4 wins at Gulfstream
  • Channel Cat – hoping to step up performance in namesake race, working bullets, high percentage trainer, hopefully solved January debacle
  • Bemma’s Boy – working bullets, 2nd last race, has won at distance, high percentage trainer, has closed last 3 races

Race 5: Appleton Stakes (G3)

  • Sombeyay – winner last time out at Gulfstream, at distance, high percentage jockey/trainer, high speed figs, always seems in the mix
  • English Bee – second to Sombeyay, winner of 3 at distance, high percentage trainer, 2nd and 2 wins in last 4 starts
  • El Tormenta – winner of 2 at distance, maybe Leparoux can work his turf magic, working out OK

Race 6: Florida Derby (G1)

  • Tiz the Law – monster in the Holy Bull at Gulfstream, winner of 3 out of 4 races, working OK
  • Ete Indien – Fountain of youth winner, consistent speed, bullet workouts, winner of 2/3 at Gulfstream
  • Independence Hall – winner of 3/4, working out well
  • Just Missed – Gouverneur Morris – moving up in class, high percentage jockey/trainer, working bullets, coming off win

Have a great day watching racing everyone, the Florida Derby looks like a great race! Shout out’s to As Seen On TV, and Disc Jockey and Ajaaweed. Should be a good one.

Not that good of a day, missed the boat completely on the Hal’s Hope, and the Oaks. Bemma’s Boy a highlight in the Pan American. Hope this wasn’t the last weekend we see racing for a while.
