Metropolitan Stakes Day, July 4th

Calvin Borel

We’ve got six races to chose the winners from on this July 4th weekend. A big day of racing at Belmont as the Metropolitan and Manhattan stakes go off today. Some great horses and a great day of racing is ahead of us.

Race 1: Poker Stakes (G3)

  • Value Proposition – coming off 2 wins and 3 of 4, gets Irad Ortiz, high percentage trainer, working out well
  • Got Stormy – I think he scratched from the Just A Game to get here, dropping in distance, working bullets, high speed figs
  • Dream Friend, high percentage trainer, front runner, has hit the board in last 6, maybe time for a win?
  • Watch for Hawkish and Seismic wave, could be good value in an upset

Race 2: Kent Stakes (G3)

  • Gufo – coming off 3 wins, high speed last race, winner at distance, moves up in class
  • Pixelate – hit the board in all 9 lifetime starts, working well, speed is close to winning speed
  • Sunsation – got Bravo here, winner of last 2, winner at distance, finished last race driving

Race 3: Metropolitan Handicap (G1)

  • Vekoma – winner of the carter, and 5 of 7, winner at distance, beat the pants off Network Effect, high percentage trainer
  • McKinzie – Beware Mike Smith, winner at distance, winner of last race, working out well
  • Code of Honor – high percentage trainer, winner of 3/4 at Belmont, working well, lost badly to McKine et al in Breeders Cup
  • Just Missed – Mr. Freeze – fast, great dirt speed, winner of 2/3 at distance, tough spot against big names

Race 4: Manhattan Stakes (G1)

  • Instilled Regard – high percentage jockey and trainer, coming off a win, winner at Belmont
  • Rockemperor – high percentage trainer, just lost last race, experience at distance
  • Devamani – second last 2 races, another Chad Brown runner, experience at distance, racing well this year

Race 5: Suburban Stakes (G2)

  • Mr. Buff – has the speed, jockey is familiar with the horse, I like his chances over Tacitus
  • Tacitus – Results haven’t been there lately, great horse though, working out well, hope he can return to glory
  • Sir Winston – Belmont winner, speed is there, can he hang off the front?

Race 6: Great Lady M. Stakes (G2)

  • Bellafina – winner last race, fast, high percentage jockey and trainer, working out well
  • Sneaking Out – winner at distance, working out well
  • Hang a Star – second last race to Bellafina, fast horse, has some decent workouts, we’ll see?

There you have it, some big races at Belmont today, have a great July 4th weekend. Play the Pick 7 Challenge.
