We’ve got races from Belmont and Santa Anita this weekend, including 4 Breeders Cup qualifiers. Some small fields this week might make you believe this will be an easy pick 6, but there are lots of good horses to pick from, and I think this will be a far from easy week. Last week saw a $200 winner. I doubt we will see that again, but anything is possible. Remember, this segment’s scoring is based on earnings, not wins. Good luck everyone.
Race 1: Champagne Stakes (G1)
- Gunite – I’ll stick with the Gun Runner offspring, hit the board in all 5 starts, winner last race in G1 Hopeful. Doubt he stays 4-1.
- Wit – Winner of 2/3 lifetime, high percentage trainer, high speed figs, ran 2nd last race to Gunite.
- Jack Christopher – High speed figs, high percentage jockey, winner in only start, working bullets.
Race 2: Woodward Stakes (G1)
- Art Collector – High speed figs, winner of last 2, winner of 4/4 at distance, is his confidence back? Maybe.
- Maxfield – Winner of 2 of last 3 races, winner at distance, high percentage jockey, high speed figs, has hit the board in all 9 lifetime starts, working well.
- Code of Honor – Winner last race, in 6 races, has a 3-2-1 record at Belmont, high speed figs, has been working out well, results have been lacking recently, back on track?
- Hard to pick any bad horses in this field, but if Forza Di Oro stays 5-1 he could provide good value, working out well, dropping back in distance, winner of 2/3 at distance and 2/3 at Belmont.
Race 3: Sprint Championship Stakes (G2)
- Dr. Schivel – Winner of last 4, winner of 3/3 at distance, high speed figs, working out well, winner at Santa Anita.
- C Z Rocket – Up against some young guns, winner at distance, has hit the board in last 10 starts, winner at Santa Anita, working out well, will be a factor.
- Flagstaff – Stakes experience, winner at Santa Anita with 9 4-2-1 record, hit the board in last 5 starts, has been second to C Z Rocket multiple times though.
Race 4: Rodeo Drive Stakes (G1)
- Going to Vegas – Winner at distance, winner at track, winner of last 2 races including G2 John C Mabee, good graded stakes track record.
- Dogtag – Has the speed to compete, finished first or second in all 5 Santa Anita starts, coming off 4 straight second place finishes, working bullets, finished second to Going to Vegas last time out.
- Luck – Your shipper, winner of 2/3 in 2021, speed is in the right range, never want to under estimate the shippers on turf.
Race 5: Awesome Again Stakes (G1)
- Medina Spirit – Competed and won some of the biggest Grade 1 races, coming off a win, working bullets, does he have the speed to win though?
- Tizamagician – First or second in last 4 starts, winner at Santa Anita, dropping in distance, working out well.
- Tripoli – Winner last race and 3 of last 4, lost to Express Train but beat Tizamagician, so hard to figure out. Working well, highest speed fig last race, first time going this distance.
Race 6: John Henry Turf Championship Stakes (G3)
- United – Winner at distance 6 3-1-1, high speed figs, winner at Santa Anita, bullet workouts, disappointing 4th to Master Piece, Award Winner, and Acclimate last races, won 6 of last 10 though?
- Acclimate – Hit the board in 7 of last 10, high speed figs, has raced at distance, plenty of experience at Santa Anita, graded stakes experience, working well.
- Award Winner – I’d take a shot with this horse, dropping back to a familiar distance, winner of 2/2 at distance, 4 2-2-0 record at Santa Anita, working out well, probably won’t remain at 12-1.
Looks like a beautiful weekend and a great day for racing. See if you can pick better than Cornelio at the Pick 6 Challenge.
