Trio of Derby Preps Today, April 2, 2022

Midnight Taboo, Aqueduct

There were so many great stakes and steaks races today, that it was difficult to chose just 6 of them. There are 3 Derby Prep races today, the Jeff Ruby Steaks, Florida Derby, and the Arkansas Derby. That leaves only 3 races available for the undercard. I had to go with the Kitten’s Joy Appleton, and tossed a miler in there with the Oaklawn Mile. I went with the grade 3 Fantasy Stakes which seemed appropriate for the last addition. Good luck everyone, let’s have a look at those fields.

Race 1: Oaklawn Mile Stakes (G3)

  • Cezanne – Consistently high speed figs, winner at distance, winner last race, working bullets, graded stakes winner, will look to up his game.
  • Fulsome – Fast speed figs, high percentage trainer/jockey, graded stakes experience, dropping distance.
  • Roadster – Competitive speed figs, lots of graded stakes experience, win at distance, working bullets, could be the winner with the right trip.
  • Just Missed – Runnin’ Ray – Winner last 2 races at distance at Oaklawn, high percentage trainer, 5 3-1-0 at distance, moving up in class, can the local boy win it?

Race 2: Kitten’s Joy Appleton Stakes (G3)

  • Phantom Currency – Winner last 2 races on the turf at Gulfstream, high percentage jockey, dropping in distance, working bullets.
  • English Bee – Dropping in distance, high percentage jockey/trainer, competitive in past graded stakes races, winner at distance.
  • Carpenter’s Call – I might take a chance on this one, winner of last 3 on turf, high percentage jockey, increasing speed figs, front running style, bullet workouts, long odds.

Race 3: Fantasy Stakes (G3)

  • Eda – Winner of last 4, last 2 at distance, graded stakes winner, winner of 5/7 overall, working out well, could be the class of the field.
  • Bubble Rock – Untested at distances greater than a mile, high percentage trainer/jockey, winner last race, working out well, 6 3-2-0 lifetime, checked in BC Juvenile, one of a few with close speed figs to Eda.
  • Dream Lith – Failed in the Rachel Alexandra, but a return to form would make her a competitive option, high percentage trainer, winner at distance, working bullets, Graded stakes experience.

Race 4: Jeff Ruby Steaks (G3)

  • Tiz the Bomb – Bounced back in the Battaglia, high speed figs, high percentage trainer, working bullets, should have the speed.
  • Stolen Base – High speed figs, lost by a neck last race to Tiz the Bomb, high percentage trainer/jockey, maybe learns from last race?
  • Tawny Port – Winner of 2 races at Turfway, working out well, high percentage trainer, ready for this race?
  • Just Missed – Red Run – despite winning last time out, I just don’t think he can make the jump today.

Race 5: Florida Derby (G1)

  • Simplification – Winner last race in the Fountain of Youth, 6 3-1-0 at Gulfstream, high speed figs, high percentage jockey, working out well, experience at the track could be a factor.
  • White Abarrio – Crushed it in the Holy Bull, 3/3 winning at Gulfstream, high speed figs, high percentage jockey/trainer, working bullets.
  • Charge It – This is what Pletcher does, come in with a maiden and beats the best, high speed figs, undefeated, high percentage jockey/trainer, working bullets, moves up in class.
  • Classic Causeway – Can’t ignore winning last 2 races, high percentage jockey, high speed figs, working well, hasn’t finished off the board lifetime.

Race 6: Arkansas Derby (G1)

  • Secret Oath – Winner of last 3 all at Oaklawn, high speed figs, winning jockey, graded stakes winner.
  • Doppleganger – Shows increasing speed, graded stakes experience, has taken more distance each race, former Baffert trained.
  • We the People – Winner in 2 lifetime starts at Oaklawn, high percentage trainer, working out well, increasing speed figs.
  • Cyberknife – Had a bum race in the Lecomte, but a bounce back win in a claimer, return to winning form perhaps? Only if he stays on the pace near the front it seems, high percentage, trainer/jockey, worth a play at long odds.
  • Un Ojo – Will always regret not picking in the Rebel, this horse also finished second in the Withers, will the odds remain long, or have we missed our shot at a pay day? High percentage trainer, winner last race, working well.

Lots of good races out there today, and the three Derby Prep races are really any horse races. It will be tough picking just 15 today, good luck everyone, lots to think about today.

Can you pick better than me?
