Belmont Stakes, June 11, 2022

Connect John Velazquez

It has been 6 weeks since the Derby, and here we are with a slate of races on Belmont Stakes day. Lots of great races today, but we could only pick 6. Will Rich Strike win again? Definitely not at long odds this week. Good luck everyone.

Race 1: Brooklyn Stakes (G2)

  • Lone Rock – Winner of 5/6 at distance, the only horse in the race to win at distance, and most haven’t even gone the distance, winner of last 2, winner at Belmont, fastest speed in the race.
  • Warrant – Good speed at 1 1/4 and 1 1/8, high percentage trainer, stakes winner and raced well against tough competition recently.
  • First Constitution – Has raced at a little longer distances than Fearless, and better record at Belmont, winner 2/3 and last race, high speed figs in Belmont starts, close to race distance and still charging last race.

Race 2: Ogden Phipps Stakes (G1)

  • Letruska – Winner of 7/8 at distance, showing no sign of slowing, winner of 7 of last 8, good speed, rail post, will try to win from the front.
  • Malathaat – Good speed, winner last race and 2/3 recently, winner at Belmont, working out well, should be a strong challenger.
  • Clairiere – Bested by Letruska frequently, I don’t see her getting by today, maybe gets the right trip? 8 4-3-1 record at distance, second in the Apple Blossom last race.

Race 3: Jaipur Stakes (G1)

  • Arrest Me Red – Winner of last race, good speed, 3/3 at distance, winner at Belmont, high percentage trainer and jockey, winner of 4 of last 5. Signs point to Red.
  • Casa Creed – Has good speed, hasn’t raced in a while, winner at distance and 2/3 at Belmont. Working out well, won Jaipur last year.
  • Scuttlebuzz – Winner of last 3, will play the closer today, 8 6-2-0 at distance and 6 3-2-0 at Belmont, so knows the track and distance. Moving up in class for sure, working out well, keeps winning jockey.

Race 4: Metropolitan Handicap (G1)

  • Flightline – Undefeated in 3 starts, high speed figs, increasing distance, untested, working out bullets, high percentage jockey.
  • Speaker’s Corner – Winner of 2/2 at distance, winner last 3 races, high speed figs, working out well, will be a duel with Flightline, high percentage jockey / trainer.
  • Aloha West – Working bullets, stretching distance, Hard Spun pedigree and winner of the Breeders Cup Sprint, picks up the pieces of a speed duel at the front?

Race 5: Manhattan Stakes (G1)

  • Gufo – Warning, I’m a big Gufo fan, winner at distance, and winner at track, second last race, high speed figs, dropping in distance form recent races, high percentage jockey / trainer.
  • Santin – Winner last race, high speed figs, adding distance this race.
  • Adhamo – High percentage jockey / trainer, winner at distance, 3rd to Santin last race though.

Race 6: Belmont Stakes (G1)

  • Mo Donegal – Winner at Belmont, good speed, high percentage jockey, working well, expect a better trip than Derby.
  • We the People – Huge in the Peter Pan, winner of 3/4 and last race, benefit of rail post, high percentage jockey / trainer, working out well.
  • Rich Strike – Working out well since Derby win, winner last race, will be rested, rather take a rested horse over a Preakness runner.

There you have it, lots of great races today, see if you can pick better than me.
