Alabama Day and we Journey to the Century Mile for the Canadian Derby, August 20, 2022

Terry O Gerri

It’s been a long time since I’ve had to add a new track to the database, but this week we are out in Edmonton, Canada at the Century Mile for the Canadian Derby. Toss in a few more races from Saratoga, Del Mar, and Monmouth, and we’ve got quite the day of racing. Let’s have a look at the fields.

Race 1: Philip H. Iselin Stakes (G3)

  • Highly Motivated – Winner at Monmouth, winner of last 2 races, winner at 1 and 1/8, lost by a neck to Essential Quality in the Bluegrass, high percentage trainer, working well.
  • Forza Di Oro – 3/3 at distance, high speed figs, hasn’t raced since October, returning to shorter distance, high percentage jockey / trainer.
  • Promise Keeper – Dud last race, and at distance, vs weaker competition, only other horse realistically hitting 100 beyers, 0/3 at distance, coming off a layoff, high percentage trainer, bound to improve, but will it be enough?

Race 2: Lake Placid Stakes (G2)

  • With The Moonlight – Winner last race, dropping distance, good speed figures, high percentage trainer, inside post is the play on inner turf at Saratoga.
  • Consumer Spending – Winner of 3/4 at distance and 1/2 at Saratoga, high speed figs, high percentage jockey/trainer, dropping distance, working well.
  • Dolce Zel – Winner last race, winner Saratoga, winner at distance, high percentage jockey / trainer, working well, could be a Chad Brown betting day.

Race 3: Smart N Fancy Stakes

  • Robin Sparkles – Winner last race, winner of 9/16 lifetime, winner at Saratoga, winner of 3/6 at distance, high speed figs, does well at distance, high percentage jockey, working out well, good price.
  • Change of Control – winner last race, inside post, consistent 90’s speed figs, lots of experience and wins at distance, should sit just off the lead.
  • Caravel – Graded stakes winner, high percentage jockey / trainer, high speed figs, bombed last race, but winner of 5/9 at distance and winner at Saratoga, working out well, bounce back candidate.

Race 4: Alabama Stakes (G1)

  • Nest – Just killing it lifetime 8 5-2-1, winner at Saratoga, winner last race, second in Belmont Stakes, high percentage trainer and jockey, highest speed figures, likely put past losses against field behind her.
  • Secret Oath – Has beaten Nest before, winner of the Kentucky Oaks, dropping in distance, working out well, lost by 12 to Nest last race, ooooooh.
  • Gerrymander – Winner of last race Mother Goose, high percentage jockey /trainer, winner at Saratoga, working out well, but hasn’t raced since June, only other horse with a 100 speed fig today.

Race 5: Del Mar Oaks (G1)

  • Cairo Memories – Graded Stakes winner, winner at distance, winner at Del Mar, dropping in distance, high speed figs, high percentage jockey, working out well.
  • Spendarella – Winner of 3 before second at Ascot, high speed figs, working out well, 4 3-1-0 lifetime.
  • Bellabel – Winner of last 3, high percentage jockey, winner at Del Mar, Graded stakes winner.

Race 6: Canadian Derby (G3)

  • Great Escape – Chased down by Red Knobs last race, but seems to have better speed figs and more potential.
  • Red Knobs – Winner last race, highest speed fig, finished in the money last 4 races.
  • Soaringforthesun – Finished on the board in 6 lifetime starts, winner last race, good speed figs, increasing distance, moving up in class.

Some large fields, and lots of opportunity here for some big wins. The Canadian Derby should be interesting. You staying up for it? See if you can beat me this week.
