Pennsylvania Derby Day, September 24, 2022

Devoted Wildcat

This Saturday we spend the day at Parx racing for the Pennsylvania Derby and the undercard. There are no US Breeder’s Cup Qualifier races this weekend, so we will just be handicapping 6 Parx races. Good luck everyone, let’s have a look at the fields.

Race 1: Greenwood Cup Stakes (G3)

  • Fearless – Highest speed figs, winner last 2 races, high percentage trainer, graded stakes winner, experienced at long distances.
  • Magic Michael – Last years winner, but little progress since, working out well, sports a ridiculous 10 9-1-0 record at Parx, high percentage jockey and trainer, moving up in class from last losing starts.
  • The Reds – Has some good speed figs, high percentage jockey, winner of last race, moving up in class for sure, moving up in distance, working out well.

Race 2: Turf Monster Stakes (G3)

  • That’s Right – Winner of 3/4 at distance, seems to settle in well at 5f, high percentage trainer, returning to 5f distance.
  • Nothing Better – Returning to 5f distance, 9 4-0-2 at distance, has hit the board last 7 races, 4 wins, decent speed figs.
  • Smooth B – Winner last race at Parx, high speed figs, high percentage jockey and trainer.
  • Uncle Ernie – 7 3-2-2 lifetime record, highest speed figure last race, dropping to shorter distance, high percentage trainer, never raced on turf though.

Race 3: Gallant Bob Stakes (G2)

  • Provocateur – Winner last race, winner of 3/5 at distance, high percentage jockey and trainer, likely a front runner.
  • Scaramouche – Winner of last 2, winner of 2/3 at distance, winner of 5/6 at Parx, high percentage trainer, jockey upgrade.
  • Lightening Larry – Winner of 3/5 at distance, good speed figs, working bullets, expecting better than last race’s bumped start.

Race 4: Cotillion Stakes (G1)

  • Secret Oath – Coming off two 2nd place finishes to Nest, get’s a break this week, winner of the Kentucky Oaks, winner of 3/4 at distance, good speed figs.
  • Adare Manor – Watching out for sneaky Mike Smith and Baffert here for sure, high speed figs, coming off two 2nd place finishes, working bullets, returning to Baffert stable.
  • Green Up – Coming off 4 wins, winner of 2/2 at distance, high percentage jockey and trainer, inside post, high speed figs.

Race 5: Pennsylvania Derby (G1)

  • Cyberknife – High speed figs, lost to Epicenter but winner of Haskell before that, winner of 2/2 at distance, high percentage jockey and trainer.
  • Taiba – Always keeping my eye on Baffert and Mike Smith, high speed figs, winner at distance, working bullets, second last race to Cyberknife.
  • Zandon – High consistent speed figures, hit the board in all starts, winner at distance, dropping back to 1 1/8, has beaten Tawny Port a few times, working out well.

Race 6: Alphabet Soup Handicap

  • Buy Land and See – Winner of 2/2 at Parx, high speed figs, high percentage trainer, winner at distance and track.
  • Midnight Hauler – Winner of last race and 2 of last 3, winner at distance, good speed figures.
  • You Must Chill – Hit the board in all 8 starts this year, high percentage jockey and trainer, winner at distance, winner at Parx, coming off a second place finish, working well.

Some wide open races today that I think long odds horses have a chance in. Others will likely go to the favorite. See if you can beat my picks.
